Exceedingly rare example of a 1906 Martin Style 5 bowlback mandolin, one of only 23 made that year. The Style 5 sits near the top of Martin's line of mandolins, and features 34 rosewood ribs in its construction; "Italian style" pearl border on spruce top w/ corded white pearl and tortoise binding, pearl and bone rosette design, inlaid pickguard with fancy pearl inlay pattern. The bound mahogany neck has a 13" scale length, ebony fretboard w/ vine pearl inlay; equipped with engraved recessed plate tuners; small frets appear original and have been dressed previously for smooth intonation/playability. There is very light forward relief (perfectly acceptable for correct playabilty), finish dings, scuffs, scrapes present. Included in sale is original bottom loading soft brown leather case (latches broken)
