Rare example by Elias Howe Co. of Boston; Howe collaborated with J.L. Orme, Canadian music retailer, on several patents in the late 19th century. This is a small bodied, double-cut mandolin, with unique rounded "cylinder" top; fully bound on top/back, rosewood back and sides, spruce top w/ inlaid pickguard; treble-side side crack present, pickguard crack on corner edge of treble side, overpsray present throughout; equipped with Waverly Cloud tailpiecel; portion of herringbone rosette has separated near fingerboard end, held together by binding. The mahogany neck has a 13" scale length elevated fingerboard, 1-1/8" nut width, fine engraved pearl inlay; repaired and pinned heel crack; relief is present on neck.
