A Piano-like cannon from the master luthier, John Greven. From the original owner who had specially ordered this from Greven, this" Herringbone-Dreadnaught" is built out of upgraded Carpathian Spruce and Mahogany, the former having been supplied by Lynn Dudenbostel.
Greven, with a keen vision and a foot in the door-of-yesteryear, produced this HD-18 with fantastic homage to what makes classic Martin guitars so impressive. With expert craftsmanship, fine build material, and the historical source material, this could easily be any collector or players crown jewel. It comes to us in fantastic condition, with very light play wear present.
The nicely yellowed, thin Carpathian Spruce soundboard is vibrant both sonically and visually. Visually it is augmented by Greven's nice choice in herringbone binding work. The nice dark Mahogany has a near rosewood personality, with nice warmth - making is present but with the classic fullness anyone would adore on a vintage D-18. Abalone rosette and the vintage style celluloid pickguard are the cherry on top to an already beautiful instrument.
Constructed with a nice light weight scalloped X bracing, its bridge plate is made of nice thin maple. The bridge and saddle, still in untouched condition, stand tall, and are fitted with ivoroid bridge pins. It has a standard 25.5" scale length, complete with a Mahogany neck and ebony fingerboard. The fingerboard has light play wear along its treble side edge, having been polished very lightly over. The frets themselves are clean, and the neck angle is strong yielding easy playability. The action measures 6/64" at the twelfth fret on the sixth string, and 5/64" on the first, again with an untouched saddle. The neck profile itself has a shallow C feel to it, with less broad of shoulders overall, measuring .82" thick at the first position and tapering up to .98" thick at the eleventh (before the curvature of the heel). It has a 1.75" nut width. Original Grover open geared tuners function flawlessly. The peg head veneer made of rosewood, with Greven's abalone inlay work glistening is clean with only superficial wear present.
