Excellent mandocello designed by French musician and teacher Lucien Gelas who patented a design in 1905 for a unique and double-top design. Gelas likely did not build instruments himself, and this 1927 mandocello was built by Jean Rovies in Paris; label present inside. The instrument has an advanced richness and is very "cello-like" in tone compared to other makers. The body has a 13.5" lower bout, to intersecting spruce tops with wood binding and inlaid wood pickguard, light stained maple back and sides, original ebony bridge with unique downpressure design; Gelas stamp present on top edge near low strings. Maple neck with 24" scale length, slotted peghead with geared tuners. Included in sale is newer guitar hard case for shipping
