Top of the line instrument by the former partner of A. C. Fairbanks. When William Cole split from Fairbanks to form his own company, he patented the Eclipse model in 1894. these banjos are extremely well crafted and include a tonering which is integrated into the wood rim. They have a sound all of their own. This particular instrument has a 10 1/2 inch rim with all original hardware and binding ivoroid binding on the outer lip. The mahogany neck has a superior heal carving and multi laminations under the fingerboard. The backstrapping of pear wood shows fine cracks from age but is very stable and extends past the 5th fret. The fingerboard inlays are especially fine making this banjo in direct competition to the Fairbanks top of the line electrics. There is continuous pearl ornamentation at the last 7 frets. There is the classic engraved pearl butterfly at the 5th fret. The peghead is richly inlaid with engraved pearl. A few pieces of which were masterfully reproduced. The peghead was then lightly refinished to embellish the engraving. This is an extraordinarily rare banjo which would be a must for anyone’s high grade collection.
