A truly exceptional banjo, one of the nicest Stewart & Sons examples we have seen. Banjos of this type are commonly referred to as "4S" banjos. They were made after the death of the founder Samuel Swain Stewart. His sons formed a company with Geo. Bauer and banjos were made in varying locations and by many different hands during the first decade of the 20th Century. This banjo has the small, celluloid plaque on the dowel stick which is marked S. S. Stewart and Sons made in NY. The banjo has the typical 11", nickel spun Stewart rim with stunning birdseye maple interior. The neck highly figured maple with a stunning carved heel, red/green multiply, ebony back strip, very fine inlay on fretboard and "SSS" engraved on peghead overlay. Outfitted with an Elite tailpiece and friction tuners.
