Violin by Oscar Clark, Northampton, Massachusetts. Oscar Clark made violins from 1888 to 1915. He is listed in Wenberg's Encyclopedia of American Violin Makers. He studied under and then worked for Andrew Hyde, who was a successful and influential violin maker in Northampton. This violin is nicely constructed. It has a one-piece, highly figured maple back and tiger maple sides and a rich red-brown varnish finish. The top has two or more poorly repaired cracks. The violin needs a complete overhaul but would be an interesting piece for a Massachusetts or East Coast violin collector. Includes original hard, coffin-style case and lovely tailpiece with inlaid butterfly. Body length 14"/356 mm.
