By the time Norwegian immigrant Chris J. Knutsen attended the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in 1909, Knutsen was well established as a builder/innovator of stringed instruments of the harp-guitar variety, and held many patents for improving his instruments. This 16 string Harp guitar showcases the influence that Hawaiian style instruments had on Knutsen, featuring rope marquetry, and highly flamed Koa wood throughout (Koa possibly purchased at the Hawaii Building at the 1909 AYP Exposition). Four bass strings on a hollow arm connected to a six-string neck with flush-fret fingerboard extension with small mandolin style frets, and six small zither style strings mounted on the instrument's top. Two brackets connect the six string neck to the body, similar to Knutsen's "Convertible" Hawaiian guitar design. Originally a "floating neck", the fingerboard extension has been glued down. Six string neck and bass strings arm share an angular "bow-tie" bridge. Structurally in excellent condition apart from a few repaired cracks, one on the top, and two on the back near the center seam. Other repairs present, including an added maple top brace, spruce cap over the neck block, and dowel behind the heel. The heel has been reworked and possibly cut down. Refinishing present on the back of the neck where a heel repair occurred years back. Included in sale is a custom built rectangular Calzone case.
