Harwood was a brand name used by J.W. Jenkins Company, a Kansas City, MO musical instrument dealer and wholesaler. They introduced the Harwood brand in 1885, and in 1889 contracted esteemed the John C. Haynes & Co. of Boston to construct all Harwood instruments until Jenkins opened up their own Kansas City shop. The No. 9 Artist Grand model combines a more standard concert size guitar body with factory standard six-string Sub-Bass harp guitar attachment. Originally this model sold for $72.50 and advertised the effectiveness of the guitar's tone and projection. This example is stamped Harwood, New York on the back of the headstock, inside the body and inlayed in a white plaque in the fingerboard. The body of this guitar measures 14" wide and 4-7/8" deep. Fine Brazilian rosewood back and sides, with a straight mahogany neck. Both original pyramid bridges have been replaced with solid rosewood replacements. Slotted headstock with open gear 3-per-plate tuners, and mini Champion friction tuners for the harp strings. Large pearl position markers present. Playing wear present, including scratches and dings throughout. Some repaired cracks, including top cracks around the bridges, and a few small cracks around the soundhole. Warm, rich, tone, with fantastic playability/response. Not only is this guitar a rare part of musical instrument history, but a true player. Comes equipped with a pickup, and a custom fitted grey Cabbage case. Thanks to Gregg Miner for his extensive research in harp guitars for information about Harwood.
