First introduced in 1912, the Gibson L-4 is a 16" powerhouse that has supported everything from big bands to folk trios over the decades. This example hails from ca. 1920, and has been dated based on appointment; slanted "The Gibson" logo indicates 1920 or earlier, and absence of a truss rod which was first introduced in 1921. Single bound peghead, bound fretboard with pointed end (treble side binding has been replaced), back/sides, diamond-pattern rosette, red mahogany sunburst. Original hardwear intact including tailpiece with pin bridge, rosewood bridge (feet have been shimmed), newer bone nut. Tuners have been replaced with 1930's era three-per-plate. A supreme player, the action and playability is excellent, and the tone is dry, and mature. Condition-wise, the guitar shows signs of playing wear including scratching on back and finish checking on top. Finish is worn on side where pickguard clamps were once present. Finish touchups around heel and overspray on top suggest a neck reset, two solidly repaired top-cracks present. Included in this sale is the purple-lined original hard case, which has been augmented with black tape for structural integrity.
