Over 10,000 Schwarzer instruments, with the majority being zithers, were made in Washington, Missouri by Austrian immigrant Franz Schwarzer, beginning in l866. Schwarzer’s zithers competed favorably with those of European makers and were sold all over the world. This example is a 32 stringed concert zither made of rosewood, with binding throughout. Label intact with a period portrait of a woman glued over the top, perhaps the original owner's sweetie. Would need a new set of strings to get going, original wood case intact, with tuner key in case pocket. Three pointed ivory feet on bottom of instrument.
