extremely ornate banjo with very fancy celluloid floral inlays in every fret position. The neck is long laminations of mahogany and maple. The peghead is an extremely unusual shape with five prongs at the top. The 11-1/8 inch rim is all metal with unusual brackets that mount in the side of the tension hoop. The rim has a wooden tone ring and fancy scalloping on the bottom edge. This banjo will require some restoration before it is ready for use. Appointments include the classic nickel-silver Paragon shield in the peghead, engraved floral mother of pearl throughout the neck, and a bone armrest. interesting, early mandolin from the house of Strathopolis. Although this instrument is not labeled, it has all of the ear marks of this immigrant maker. The neck has the characteristic multi laminations, the thick tortoise pick guard and peghead overlay are adorned with tasteful mother of pearl vines and the top is trimmed in pearl in the Greek key pattern. This outstanding offering is from the collection of Akira Tsumura and featured on page 271 of his book, 1001 Banjos. It is a Lange made banjo uke with 8 inch rim and rosewood neck and resonator. The rim is gold plated and consists of two layers of metal with ornate fretwork. The banjo is very solid but the are a few issues. The plastic in the peghead needs regluing, there is a pearloid band on the side wall of the resonator and that is deteriorating. The tuners are replace.
